What do experts say?

Dr. Puneet Rana Arora, director-gynecologist and IVF expert of CIFAR, Gurugram, says that this cancer starts from the cervix. This is the thin lower part of the uterus, which helps in connecting the uterus to the vagina.

The main cause of cervical cancer is usually long-term infection with certain strains of human papillomavirus, a common virus that is spread through sexual contact.

How does this cancer spread?

Doctors say that most infections get cured on their own, but if the germs persist, they start growing abnormally in the cells inside the cervix. If abnormal cells are not identified and treated, they start turning into cervical cancer.

What are the symptoms of Cervical Cancer?

According to the doctor, initially, there are no symptoms of cervical cancer. But when cancer starts spreading, symptoms like abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or pelvic pain during intercourse may appear. But these symptoms appear in advanced stage. Therefore, it is important to get screened for cervical cancer.

Why is cervical cancer on the rise?

The cases of cervical cancer among women are increasing rapidly in India because its awareness among the people is very less. Most of the women in the country do not know about the HPV vaccine and hence, they have not even got it administered. Not getting screening done can also increase this cancer.
