The same batsman who has given sleepless nights to the bowlers in senior cricket is seen struggling to score runs at the junior level. We are talking about Ayush Mhatre, who is currently captaining the Indian team in the Under-19 World Cup 2026. Despite being the captain, his bat has remained silent till now in the 50-over Under-19 matches.
A big innings was expected from Ayush (Ayush Mhatre) against America in the first match of Under-19 World Cup 2026, but he returned to the pavilion after scoring 19 runs in 19 balls. The surprising thing is that the performance of this young batsman from Mumbai in senior and junior cricket seems completely opposite to each other.
Why was Ayush Mhatre seen struggling in Under-19 ODI?
Ayush Mhatre’s Under-19 ODI record is shocking. So far he has scored only 162 runs in 15 innings, that too at an average of just 10.8. He could not score a single half-century in these matches. His highest score was 38 runs, which came against Pakistan in the Under-19 Asia Cup. The most surprising thing is that out of 15 innings, he could cross double figures only in five innings, while seven times he was out for less than five runs.
Statistics look completely different in senior cricket
Now if we look at the senior cricket statistics of Ayush Mhatre, the picture changes completely. In List-A cricket, he has scored 458 runs in seven innings. During this period his average was 65.4 and strike rate was 135.50. These innings include two centuries and one half-century. All these innings have come for the Mumbai cricket team, where he looked completely confident.
Mhatre’s strength shown in T20 format also
Ayush Mhatre’s record in T20 cricket has also been excellent. He has scored runs in 13 T20 matches at an average of 56.50 and strike rate of 175.46. The special thing is that in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored two centuries in just six innings, which attracted the attention of the selectors.
Has left a mark in IPL too
Ayush Mhatre’s name has also reached IPL. He was signed by Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League 2025. That season he played seven matches and scored 240 runs with the help of one half-century. His average in IPL was 34.28 and strike rate was 188.97, which clearly shows his aggressive nature.
These contradictory figures of Ayush Mhatre, hit in senior cricket and flop in Under-19, definitely surprise, but considering his age and experience, it would not be wrong to say that this young captain will soon be seen showing his class at the junior level also.
