United Nations. The UN Security Council discussed the deadly protests in Iran in an emergency meeting on Thursday. This meeting was called at the request of America. However, US President Donald Trump did not clarify what action he would take against Iran. Before the meeting, Tehran made some conciliatory statements intended to calm the situation. Iran took this step after Trump threatened to take action to stop the killings of protesters.

Caroline Levitt, press secretary of the White House (the official residence and office of the US President), said before the meeting, “All options are open for the President.” According to the US-based ‘Human Rights Activists News Agency’, at least 2,615 people have died so far in the crackdown on protesters in Iran. This death toll is higher than any other protest or unrest in Iran in the past several decades.

At an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, the United Nations warned that military attacks on Iran could create further instability. “Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urges maximum restraint at this sensitive time and calls on all parties to avoid any action that could lead to further loss of life or worsen the situation across the region,” UN Assistant Secretary-General Martha Poby told the meeting.

He said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres still maintains that all issues to Iran, including its nuclear program, should be resolved only through diplomacy and dialogue. According to Martha Pobie, the UN chief reiterated the principles of the ‘United Nations Charter’, under which disputes should be resolved peacefully and the use or threat of force is prohibited.
