Once again Pakistan raised the issue of Kashmir in the United Nations. At the same time, India also criticized Pakistan once again. India said it is misusing the concept of self-determination to attack democratic and pluralistic countries by lying on the Kashmir issue. “At a time when member states need to rise above their narrow-mindedness, Pakistan is misusing all platforms and processes at the UN to pursue its divisive agenda,” Aldos Poonos, counselor at India’s UN mission, told the General Assembly on Thursday.
He said, “The right to self-determination is a fundamental principle enshrined in the UN Charter. However, this right should not be misused to promote separatism among like-minded and democratic countries. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India.”
In fact, the assembly was discussing Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report on the work of the UN last year. During this, Pakistan’s permanent representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmed mentioned Kashmir. Now, no matter what the issue of discussion in the Assembly is, Pakistan always keeps singing the praises of Kashmir. Even if other members ignore Pakistan’s old tune on the issue of Kashmir, it still keeps repeating the same thing.
Punoos said, “This forum is no different, and Pakistan unnecessarily mentioned the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an essential and inalienable part of India. Although Pakistan has got used to it, it would be better if it does not resort to baseless allegations and lies and does not paint a picture that is completely different from the reality.”
Ahmed talked about self-determination for the Palestinian people and during this he also mentioned Kashmir. He talked about respecting UN resolutions. Let us tell you, United Nations Security Council Resolution 47, adopted on April 21, 1948, demands that Pakistan withdraw its army and infiltrators from the entire Kashmir. India says that the referendum in Kashmir is now meaningless because the people of Kashmir have made clear their loyalty to India by taking part in the elections and electing the leaders of the region.
Ahmed reiterated Pakistan’s opposition to increasing the permanent membership of the UN Security Council. The biggest reason for this is simply enmity with India. However, most of the UN members, especially African countries, do not agree with Pakistan on this issue.
