Batter Virat Kohli’s quest for the 85th century in his illustrious career ended in heartbreak on Sunday, January 11, as the former India captain was dismissed on 93 off 91 balls in the first One-Day International against New Zealand in Vadodara. This marked his entry into the list of players with the most nervous 90s in ODI cricket, though. The list, filled with the greats of the game, has Sachin Tendulkar topping the chart. 

The term “nervous nineties” refers to a batsman getting dismissed while batting in the 90s, just before reaching the coveted landmark. It is widely regarded as the most nervous part of a batter’s innings. And many have been victims of this phase. 

Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with a staggering 18 dismissals between the scores of 90-100 in ODI cricket. Despite holding the record for most centuries in international cricket, the former India captain finds himself at the top in this unwanted list of batters, underlining how even the best were not immune to the pressure of reaching three figures. 

Former New Zealand all-rounder Nathan Astle has been dismissed in the nervous 90s on nine occasions, the joint second-most in ODI history. He is also joined by Sri Lanka’s Aravinda de Silva, Zimbabwe legend Grant Flower, and current Kiwi superstar Kane Williamson. 

Kohli, meanwhile, has now eight nervous nineties in the 50-over internationals since his debut in 2008. He is now tied with Jacques Kallis on the list. The 37-year-old is also the player with the most ODI hundreds in history, with a staggering 53 hundreds to his name.

Apart from Kohli and Tendulkar, several other prominent Indian batters, too, feature on this list. That includes legendary names like Mohammad Azruddin (7 times), Shikhar Dhawan (7 times), MS Dhoni (6 times), and Sourav Ganguly (6 times).
