Prince Philip may have appeared to be one of the more stern members of the Royal Family, but he was also famously known to have a great sense of humour. This was often on display around his family, close friends and even at some royal events and engagements.

Philip's humour was also easy to see behind closed doors, with the late Queen's husband having reportedly pranked Buckingham Palace cleaners when he called the royal residence home. He did this by hiding peas in the mouth of the dragon ornament, which sat below a clock in the Chinese Dining Room, located in the East Wing.

It is believed Philip did this to see whether or not the cleaners would notice and whether they were cleaning thoroughly, according to Hello! Magazine.

While this may come as a surprise to some, it may not to others, with Philip known for his sense of humour.

This has been spoken about by the royals many times, with Prince William having even described his grandfather's sense of humor as "mischievous."

William and his cousins also once spoke about a prank their grandfather used to do during meal times in the 2021 BBC One documentary, Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.

The Prince of Wales said in the documentary: "One of the games he used to enjoy playing was, when we used to go for family barbecues, instead of like a mustard pot we had a mustard tube, a squeezey mustard tube, and he used to take the lid off and put it in your hands."

Zara Tindall, William's cousin, added: "He gets you to hold it in your hands and the lid's off and I can't remember exactly what he says, but he ends up slamming your hands together."

William added: "And then he'd squish your hands together [to] fire the mustard into the ceiling."

It is believed this prank used to get him told off by the late Queen Elizabeth II, however Philip still enjoyed the prank and having a laugh with his grandchildren.

This was the case right up until his 2021 death.
