Delhi. Amid widespread protests in Iran over inflation and currency devaluation, many Indian citizens have returned home via commercial flights. According to officials, several commercial flights carrying Indian citizens landed at the Delhi airport on Friday night.
However, at present it is not known how many Indians have returned home on these flights. Ali Naqvi was among a group of 12-13 passengers who arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in a commercial flight. Asked whether he faced any problems in Iran, Naqvi said, “We did not face any problems.”
Naqvi told the news agency, “We have returned from Tehran. First we were in Iraq, then went to Iran. After staying there for eight days, we have returned to India.” “The internet was not working. So, we didn’t know exactly what was happening in the country,” said a student studying at a medical college in Shiraz.
The student said that the conditions in the city where she was living were “fine”. He said, “We have come back on a commercial flight on our own and not under the arrangements made by the Indian government.” On Friday night many people reached the airport to receive their relatives who had returned from Iran. Many Indians who returned looked worried.
However, he said the Indian Embassy in Tehran is providing comfort to all its citizens in Iran through available communication channels, providing them travel advisories and explaining the return process. “We were definitely worried because this is a global issue and when internet services were shut down, we were quite upset,” said Abbas Kazmi, who was on his way to pick up his mother and aunt who had returned from Iran.
“But as soon as communication was restored, we realized that the situation was under control. We were reassured that everything was fine. As soon as the advisory was issued, we registered at the embassy and waited for further instructions. My mother’s flight was already scheduled, so everything went smoothly and we are happy,” Kazmi said.
At the airport, some parents welcomed their children returning from Iran with garlands of flowers. A father hugged his daughter. During this, tears of happiness and relief welled up in his eyes. A student returning from Tehran said, “It was a very difficult period. The situation on the roads was tense and due to the internet service being closed, we felt that we were cut off from the world.
Now returning to India and meeting our families is a great relief and we feel safe.” Shajid, another student who returned from Iran, said that the situation was uncertain and the feeling of fear had increased due to the communication blackout. Shajid said, “Relief came as soon as we got information about the travel arrangements.
It was really a great feeling to reach home and meet my family members and see them breathing a sigh of relief.” Anti-government protests began in December last year in Tehran after the Iranian currency rial hit a record low against the US dollar, which gradually spread to all 31 provinces of the country. More than 2,500 people are reported to have died in Iran due to the protests and the crackdown on protesters.
