According to a recent shocking news, people’s bank accounts are being emptied just with the help of fingerprints. Imagine, without any OTP and password, someone steals your money just with your Aadhaar and thumb impression. This case is of AEPS fraud (Aadhaar Scam), which is targeting people especially in rural areas.

How does this Aadhaar fraud happen?

Fraudsters first steal your Aadhaar data and biometric information, such as fingerprints. This data is sometimes obtained from leaked records. After this, scammers create fake fingerprints and use them on AEPS micro-ATMs. With this, money is withdrawn from your account as if someone has obtained the keys of the safe without permission.

Aadhaar Scam: Mule Account Game

Now it is important to know where this money goes? Scammers resort to “mule accounts.” These are accounts that are either rented or acquired by hackers. Fraudsters move money using these accounts, making it difficult to trace the real criminals.

GPS device will brake

Experts believe that the most effective way to prevent such fraud is to use GPS-enabled devices. This means that transactions can be done only from the location where this machine is registered. If someone tries from another location, the payment will fail. This also benefits banks as GPS data helps in identifying locations of fraud.

The future will be even smarter

In the future, these devices may include technologies like AI and biometric liveness check, which will make it impossible to use fake fingerprints. It should be kept in mind that these devices do not track your location, but rather increase the security of the location of the machine, due to which your privacy is also maintained.

Aadhaar Scam: How can you avoid it?

First of all, it is very important to be aware. Get your Aadhaar and biometrics locked by visiting the UIDAI website. Do not update Aadhaar at any unknown or fake center. Be careful while giving photocopy of Aadhar card. Make a copy of the physical card only and after sending the digital photo, delete it immediately.
