Chelsea are set to make a move for highly sought-after Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet and may also sign an attacking midfielder this month due to Cole Palmer's ongoing groin problem. The Blues have recently seen a change in management with Liam Rosenior taking over from Enzo Maresca, providing the former Strasbourg boss with an opportunity to tweak the inherited squad during the transfer window, which remains open until February 2.

Under their current ownership, Chelsea have made significant moves in the transfer market, and they could be ready to spend big again in the winter window. Chelsea are prepared to proceed with a move for the highly-rated 20-year-old Jacquet, despite Rennes' reluctance to sell their star defender this month.

Jacquet has attracted attention from other top clubs, including Arsenal and Bayern Munich, following his impressive performances in Ligue 1.

And the Blues have already struck a contract agreement with the player.

Chelsea are keen to bolster their defence this January as their first-choice centre-back, Levi Colwill, has been sidelined all season due to an ACL injury. They previously attempted to sign Dean Huijsen, but the Bournemouth player opted for Real Madrid instead.

With a move for Jacquet expected soon, the club is also considering adding an attacking midfielder, according to The Sun. Palmer, a key player for the Blues, has been hampered by a groin issue this season, limiting him to just 12 appearances.

Chelsea have also bid farewell to Facundo Buonanotte, whose season-long loan was abruptly ended by Brighton this week, allowing the Argentina international to join forces with Leeds.

Rosenior hinted at potential transfer activity for Chelsea this month, admitting: "I think if we do [make signings in January] it needs to be the right player. We need to be patient. I want to assess this group. It's really, really important to me.

"We still have time. We have conversations every day, myself and the board, about potential transfers, both out and in. But at the same time, I need to focus on the players in the building.

"If I feel it's the right time or the right player, then we'll make that decision."
