Babar Azam 'Disrespected' After Steve Smith Feud, Sparks Dressing Room Ruckus in BBL

In a recent Big Bash League (BBL) match on January 16 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Pakistan's star player Babar Azam seemed to have a bit of a spat with Steve Smith during the game between the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.

The tension kicked off in the 11th over of the Sixers’ innings, which was their designated Power Surge. Unlike the usual four-over powerplay at the beginning, the Power Surge gives teams a chance to take advantage of fielding restrictions later in the innings.

Babar, who was batting well at 47 runs off 38 balls with seven boundaries, was looking to rotate the strike when Steve Smith made a surprising call to deny him a single.  Smith later clarified that he wanted to face the first over of the Power Surge to maximize scoring opportunities, especially with the shorter boundary in play.

While Smith's strategy ultimately worked out, Babar's frustration was clear. He reportedly felt 'disrespected' both on the field and in the dressing room after the match.

His annoyance became even more apparent when he lost his wicket on the very first ball of the 13th over to Nathan McAndrew. Trying to play a leg-side shot, he ended up with a thick inside edge that knocked the stumps down.

On-Field Spat Involving Babar Azam and Steve Smith

In a moment of anger, Babar slammed his bat against the boundary cushions as he walked back to the dugout. His body language during this time spoke volumes about his displeasure. He skipped the usual post-match celebrations on the field, and sources say he voiced his frustration in the dressing room.

According to reports from Code Sports, things escalated into a heated exchange, with Babar openly criticizing Smith’s decision and even planning to discuss it with the Sydney Sixers management and the PCB. Despite the drama, Smith's choice turned out to be a winning one.

He hit four consecutive sixes followed by a four off Ryan Hadley during the Power Surge, racking up 32 runs in a single over, which is now the highest in BBL history.
