Thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark and Nuuk against Trump’s statements on Greenland

Copenhagen/Nuk. Thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark and Greenland’s capital Nuuk in protest against Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding control over Greenland. The demonstrations were organized as part of the “Hands off Greenland” campaign, which was said to be aimed at protecting Greenland’s sovereignty and right to self-determination.

“We are protesting against the statements and ambitions made by the United States to subjugate Greenland. We demand respect for the Danish Kingdom and Greenland’s right to self-determination,” Camilla Seising, president of the Joint Association Inuit, said in a statement.

Tension increased due to threat of tariff
The protests came as Donald Trump warned on Friday that tariffs could be imposed on countries that do not support his plan to annex Greenland. He then shared a photo of himself on his social media platform, describing himself as “Mr. Tariff” and “Tariff King.”

Different stance of the US Congress delegation
Meanwhile, a delegation of lawmakers from both major parties of the US Congress met with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland in Copenhagen. The delegation expressed support for Greenland and Denmark, which is believed to be contrary to the statements coming from the White House.

Presence of NATO troops, concern among people
This week, there has been increased concern among local residents amid the presence of NATO allied troops in Greenland. Some people are storing essential items, while some have started preparations to leave the place immediately in case the situation worsens.

Amidst the increasing international tension regarding Greenland, the people of Denmark and Greenland have made it clear that they will not compromise their sovereignty in the face of any external pressure.
