Hiring title-winning coaches like John Harbaugh hasn’t been a New York sports boon

The Giants will do something they’ve never done before when they officially hire John Harbaugh: land a coach with a Super Bowl already on his résumé. He is the 25th man hired by our nine pro teams who’s won a championship previously.

You may be surprised that just two of those 24 ever duplicated their success, including the six who were rehired by New York teams for which they’d already won. Here they are in chronological order (with helpful letter grades!*).

(*-Grades only cover time with the New York team, or in the case of rehires, their second time. Also: Special mention to Eddie Firmani, who led Tampa Bay to the 1975 NASL title before doing it with the Cosmos in ’77 and ’78, and Sandy Brondello, who won a WNBA title in Phoenix in ’14 before winning with the Liberty in ’24).

Frank Chance, Yankees, 1913: He won as a player-manager of the Cubs (1907-08), but his time with the Highlanders was a forgettable 117-169. Grade: D
