Pillow Cover Changing Benefits: Often people pay attention to expensive products and treatments for skin care, but some small everyday habits also have a deep impact on skin health. One of these is pillow cover. Skin experts say that changing the pillow cover at least once a week is very important for skin health, especially for those who have problems with pimples, allergies or sensitive skin. In such a situation, let us know from Dr. Meenu Malik what is the connection between pillow cover, skin and sleep?
How do bacteria and oil accumulate in pillows?
Dr. Meenu Malik, Visiting Consultant, Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, Aakash Healthcare, explains that while sleeping at night, sweat, oil (sebum), dead skin cells and hair products from our face, hair and body get deposited in the pillow cover. Within a few days this cover can become a home for bacteria and fungus.
Dermatologist explains, “Sleeping on the same pillow cover for several days causes bacteria and dirt to accumulate on it, which comes in direct contact with the facial skin and can increase skin problems.”
Why does the risk of pimples and allergies increase?
A dirty pillow can clog the skin pores. This increases the problem of acne, blackheads and whiteheads. Apart from this, itching, rash and redness may also increase in people who suffer from allergies or eczema. According to Dr., “People with acne-prone or sensitive skin may have frequent breakouts due to dirty pillowcases, even if they are following the right skin care routine.”
Connection of sleep and skin health
The skin repairs itself during sleep. But if the sleeping environment is not clean, this process can be affected. A clean pillow cover not only protects the skin from bacteria, but also helps in better sleep. Skin specialist Dr. Meenu says, “Good sleep and clean bed are as important for skin health as right diet and skin care products.”
How often should pillow covers be changed?
Experts recommend that
People with normal skin should change the cover once a week.
People with oily or acne-prone skin, in 3–4 days
If pimples or allergies are severe, it is better to change the cover every 2–3 days
Pillow covers made of cotton or silk fabric are considered safer for the skin.
How to keep skin safe?
Doctors recommend adopting some easy measures like-
Clean face thoroughly before sleeping
Wash pillow covers with mild detergent
never sleep with makeup on
Make these changes in your habits
According to Dr., “Many times skin problems are not cured by medicines but by change in habits. Changing the pillow cover is an important part of that.” If you are troubled by pimples, allergies or recurring skin problems, then instead of just changing the cream, pay attention to your sleeping habits also. Changing your pillowcase once a week is a small but effective step towards keeping your skin clean, healthy and glowing.
