Cancer Causes: A recent study from Britain has increased concern around the world about the health of children. This new research has claimed that cancer-linked pesticide glyphosate is present in about 60% of Britain’s children’s playgrounds and parks. But what is even more surprising is that this chemical is not limited to just the grass or soil of the park but was also found on the swings, slides and play equipment installed here.

How safe are India’s parks?

After the UK report came out, questions have started being raised in India too whether the playgrounds of children here are safe? Can the situation in India be more serious than in Britain? This is because there is no concrete system regarding the use and monitoring of pesticides in public places.

Why did the UK study increase concern?

In Britain, experts from Pesticide Action Network UK (Pan UK) had collected about 13 samples from playgrounds in many areas of England. Testing of 8 of these samples found that there were cancerous germs on the swings and other equipment.

However, the reason behind conducting this study was to see how safe the levels of pesticides are in children’s everyday play areas. During this investigation, it was found that city councils and local bodies regularly spray glyphosate to remove grass and weeds.

Why is glyphosate dangerous?

According to health experts, there is already a reason for debate at the international level regarding glyphosate. WHO’s sister organization IARC has already declared it a carcinogen. In such a situation, its presence in children’s playing areas cannot be taken lightly.

How will cancer happen?

Researchers said that glyphosate can cause cancer. If there are such dangerous chemicals in the park then children may get infection. Actually, small children put their fingers in their mouth. In such a situation, it is normal to touch the nose, eyes and mouth with your dirty hands. Many times children also keep dirty instruments in their mouth, which can cause infection.

He has said that if a pregnant mother comes in contact with glyphosate particles, her baby may also get cancer. Mothers who breastfeed can also cause cancer in their children. Therefore, strict laws should be made on its use.

Used extensively in India

Glyphosate chemical is used extensively in parks, roadsides, vacant plots and government lands by municipal corporations, development authorities and local bodies in India.

But the problem is that there is no official testing of the level of pesticides in the sports grounds of India, nor is this information given to the common people as to when, where and in what quantity they should be used.

What will happen if exposed to glyphosate?

Let us tell you that this chemical can affect adults including children. Prolonged exposure to pesticides like glyphosate can cause some problems, such as-

  • Respiratory problems.
  • Neurological disease.
