Google now provides the facility to change the Gmail address (the part before @gmail.com). Old data will remain safe. This change can be made only once in 12 months and a total of 3 times in the lifetime of the account.
Many people wish they could change their old Gmail address, which they once created, from nickname or date of birth. Using such 'old fashion' Gmail addresses for professional work is now a matter of embarrassment for many people. Google has now solved this problem of millions of Gmail users. Google has started rolling out this feature globally from January 17, 2026, allowing users to change the part before @gmail.com. This feature of editing Gmail ID will gradually be available to all users. Let us know in detail how you can edit your old Gmail address.
Gmail provides the facility to edit the part before your primary email address, i.e. @gmail.com. This means that now you can easily create a new one by editing the first part of the Gmail address. This is the first time in the history of Gmail that a feature to edit ID has come. You don't have to worry that your old emails, photos, videos or other files will be deleted when you update your ID. Google guarantees that all emails and files in your old Gmail address will remain safe.
But, you cannot edit your Gmail address whenever you want. Google has introduced this new feature with some strict rules. Once you change your primary Gmail address, you will not be able to change it again for the next 12 months i.e. one year. Additionally, you can change the primary address, i.e. the part before @gmail.com, only three times in the lifetime of a Gmail account.
