Tannirbhavi: The sky above Tannirbhavi Blue Flag Beach turned vibrant as colourful kites shaped like animals, birds, dragons, Mickey Mouse and other figures attracted large crowds during the kite festival organised as part of the coastal festival.

Kite experts from 15 countries participated in the festival and flew a wide variety of kites, creating a visual treat for visitors. The event reflected the theme of “one sky, one world,” with international kite flyers coming together to entertain the public.

A giant shark-shaped kite measuring about 25 metres caught special attention. Organisers said the kite was as wide as the space needed to park two cars. From heart-shaped kites to tiny three-foot-long kites, several unique designs were on display.

Night-time kite flying with colourful electric lights will also be held on Sunday. Along with the kite flying, a food fair and selfie points were arranged for public entertainment.

The two-day international kite festival was held on January 17 and 18 and was inaugurated by Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader.

Legislative Council member Ivan D’Souza praised the event and said such programmes help boost tourism and also support economic growth. Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V and members of Team Mangaluru, who extended cooperation for the event, were present.

Speaker U T Khader said the kite festival has become a symbol of harmony along the coast. “People from all communities, from children to senior citizens, come together and enjoy this event. Such programmes bring happiness and unity. The government is interested in organising more such events as they contribute to district development,” he said.

Dave and Clara, a couple from England, who visited Mangaluru for the second time, participated in the kite festival and expressed happiness. They said the local weather conditions are ideal for kite flying.
