Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This problem seems to be on the rise among Indians. According to a large study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), this disease has become the most common chronic liver disorder in the world. The study states that around 30 to 40 percent of the world’s population is affected by this disease. Abdominal obesity is considered to be the biggest risk factor.
According to this research, 60 to 70 percent of patients with type-2 diabetes and 70 to 80 percent of people suffering from obesity are likely to develop MASLD. Along with diabetes and obesity, this disease has been found to be associated with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease as well as various cancers, especially liver cancer.
According to researchers, the incidence of MASLD is higher in men than in women. About 15,731 cases are found in males and 14,310 in females for every one lakh population. In men, this disease is mainly seen in the age group of 45 to 49 years, while in women, it is more common in the age group of 50 to 54 years.
Dr. Diabetes and obesity specialist in Mumbai. Rajeev Kovil has warned that if current trends continue, MASLD may soon become India’s biggest metabolic disease. However, experts say that if the disease is detected in time, it can be brought under control.
Hepatologist known as “Liverdock” Dr. Syriac AB Phillips said on social media that many patients don’t know that the disease can be completely cured with the right lifestyle changes. “Take charge of your health, there are no shortcuts. Go slowly but steadily,” he advises.

According to Union Health Ministry estimates, the prevalence of MASLD in India may range from 9 to 53 percent. Wrong lifestyle, ultra-processed food, excessive consumption of sugar, lack of physical activity and alcoholism are increasing the disease. According to experts, the most effective treatment for fatty liver is proper diet, regular exercise, weight control and abstinence from alcohol rather than drugs.
