It's a constant problem every winter and even when it's not snowing and we're not in the grip of a weather warning, every morning brings fresh ice buildup on your windscreen thanks to freezing overnight temperatures.

There are all sorts of weird and wonderful tips out there, from sandwich bags to lemons and onions and potatoes, which are purported to help stop your windscreen from freezing over.

But according to breakdown experts at the RAC, there's a far simpler and far safer way to prevent ice and frost buildup on your car which doesn't require odd items or amateur defrosting hacks.

The RAC says simply buying a proper car cover is a good investment, because a car put undercover won't freeze over, as the condensation, dew, rainwater and snow can't get to it.

The RAC says: "One of the best tactics to use this winter is to try and prevent the build-up of ice overnight. Here are the two easiest ways of doing that.

"However, if you have a garage or somewhere you can park away from the elements, then that will also help your car not freeze.

"[A] durable and fitted PVC cover will shelter your vehicle from the ice and mean that it can be easily removed before you head off on your car journey.

"You will likely need to still turn on your air conditioning and windscreen heaters, but it will significantly reduce the time you spend removing ice from the windows.

"When it isn't in use, make sure to thoroughly clean it so that it doesn't get mould stuck to it."

You can also buy covers just for the windscreen or windows, but this won't protect all of the car, though they're usually slightly cheaper.

It adds: "Similarly, these covers will also stop the build-up of ice on the glass parts of the vehicle - but will leave the rest of the vehicle exposed.

"The windscreen is attached by hooking on the door mirrors.

"When you buy one, it will not include one for the rear window.

"The door mirror covers are applied like bags that go over the casing and are then tied shut."
