Gadag: Archaeological excavation at the historic site of Lakkundi in Gadag district continued to reveal important findings, with Stone Age tools being discovered on the fourth day of the ongoing operation.
Officials involved in the excavation said an ancient stone tool, believed to date back to the Stone Age, was found during the day’s digging. The tool is oval-shaped with one sharp edge, indicating that it may have been used by early humans for hunting or self-protection.
Excavation work has been underway at Lakkundi for the past four days. During the earlier stages, archaeologists had already unearthed significant remains, including a Shivalinga and a Panipitha. On the fourth day, while removing layers of soil, the team found a uniquely shaped stone object. After examination, experts identified it as a Stone Age hand axe.
Soon after the discovery, excavation supervisors carefully secured the tool to prevent damage. It was placed in a plastic cover, labelled with detailed information and the date, and preserved safely for further study.
Archaeology officials said the finding adds to the historical importance of Lakkundi and provides evidence of human activity in the region dating back to prehistoric times.
