According to the latest reports, while India's state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) may appear years behind Jio and Airtel in the 5G race, the real reason is something else entirely. With 97,000 4G sites and indigenous 5G-ready gear, the government-owned BSNL is now targeting millions of customers who are frustrated by the tariff hikes of private companies. The report suggests that BSNL's slow and steady approach could change the dynamics of the telecom market.

According to industry reports, BSNL's hardware partner, Tejas Networks, has already supplied 5G-ready gear. The more than 97,000 deployed sites can be upgraded to 5G with just a software push, without incurring high costs. Furthermore, the company states that BSNL will initially launch 5G NSA (Non-Standalone), but its ultimate goal is to provide the most advanced 5G Stand-Alone network.

BSNL gets an opportunity due to the expensive private plans
Market analysts report that since private telecom operators increased their plan prices, BSNL has seen a rapid increase in its active user base. This is because segments like students and professionals are not looking for 5G all day, but rather an affordable and stable 4G connection. In this scenario, the combination of high-speed broadband at home and affordable BSNL 4G outside is posing a strong challenge to Jio and Airtel's expensive 5G portfolios.

Vodafone Idea is losing its users.
Recent subscriber data reports show that while Vodafone Idea is losing its active users, BSNL is slowly regaining its lost ground. BSNL's 4G is now reaching even the remotest corners of the country, areas where private companies previously held a monopoly.

Telecom analysts believe that for BSNL, it is more important to strengthen its 4G presence in every district and village than to rush into 5G. This is why BSNL is lagging behind other companies. However, this strategy could give BSNL a distinct identity compared to private companies.
