For those dreaming of escaping the UK's dreary February weather, this incredible destination offers everything that a winter sun option should, from powdery white sands that stretch for miles to turquoise waters that sparkle under a sun that brings temperatures of close to 30C. A place where winter coats are swapped for swimsuits, this seaside city is the ultimate escape from the cold.
The seaside city of Cancun is Mexico's crown jewel on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, famous for its stunning Caribbean beaches, luxury resorts, vibrant nightlife and rich Mayan history. Its beaches are world-famous for a reason. Playa Delfines offers breathtaking panoramic views and a quieter atmosphere for those looking to escape the madness, while Playa Forum buzzes with beach bars, live music and watersports. Beyond the sand, Cancun offers a thriving food scene.
It would be remiss for a visitor to Cancun to miss out on sipping a tequila cocktail on a rooftop bar while overlooking the lagoon as the sun sets - a true postcard-perfect moment.
Cancun is essentially split into two main areas: the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) and Downtown Cancun (El Centro). Each caters to a different kind of traveller. The Hotel Zone is a vibrant 14-mile-long narrow strip of land that's actually shaped like the number seven, separating the Caribbean Sea from the Nichupté Lagoon. The iconic white-sand beaches are on the former's side, while the lagoon is home to a variety of wildlife.
If partying is your thing, this is where you want to be, as iconic clubs and bars like Coco Bongo, Mandala and Señor Frog's are concentrated here. Most big resorts line this zone, making it convenient for poolside lounging, beach access and organising excursions.
El Centro, meanwhile, is further inland, across the lagoon and is where locals live, shop and eat. Away from the main tourist hub, here visitors can find authentic Mexican restaurants, street tacos and mercados (markets) packed with handmade crafts.
Cancun also serves as an excellent base for exploring Mexico's iconic landmarks. A must-visit is Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan city and UNESCO World Heritage site, just a few hours' drive away. Adventure seekers can also visit Isla Mujeres for snorkelling and swimming with dolphins, or explore Tulum with its cliffside ruins and Caribbean views.
In February, when the weather in Cancun is warm, sunny and dry with pleasant, cool evenings, Brits can travel direct from Gatwick Airport with British Airways to Cancun's airport (CUN) for just £576 return. For those looking to save as much as possible, the journey can also be made with Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow Airport, with a stop in Atlanta (ATL) on the return journey, for the lower price of £509.
