Valentino Garavani, known around the world as the fashion designer Valentino, has died aged 93, his foundation has announced.
In a statement, the foundation said: Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones."
A lying in state will be held on Wednesday and Thursday to pay tribute to the fashion designer, known for his Valentino fashion brand.
A funeral will be held in Rome on Friday.
Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni paid tribute, posting on X: "Valentino, undisputed master of style and elegance and eternal symbol of Italian high fashion. Today Italy loses a legend, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations. Thank you for everything."
The Business of Fashion added: "Valentino, Italy's fashion 'Emperor,' has died. A master of breathtakingly beautiful eveningwear, the couturier turned a startup label into one of the world's best known fashion brands."
Italian outlet Repubblica also said: "The emperor is no more. Valentino Garavani has passed away at the age of 93 in Rome, his most beloved adopted homeland where he had chosen to live and work forever."
