People are being advised to add one simple item to their tumble dryer to cut drying time in half. Throughout winter, opportunities to line-dry washing outdoors are scarce due to limited sunshine and chilly weather.
This means many households resort to heated airers or even radiators to get their laundry dry. Recently, Which?, the UK's independent consumer champion, has cautioned people to "stop" drying clothes on radiators.
They warn that whilst achieving dry garments might be the aim, placing items on radiators could trigger various problems, including inflated energy costs.
An alternative is investing in a tumble dryer, provided you have both the financial means and adequate space at home. However, this introduces another electricity-consuming appliance into your daily routine, which can prove expensive.
Bearing this in mind, TikTok user Peter Walsh has revealed a technique he employs that reduces tumble dryer time by 50%.
He explained: "Here's a life hack for anybody who washes their clothes... may sound boring. But if you're washing your clothes and you put your clothes in the dryer, put a dry towel into the dryer with the wet clothes and it cuts the drying time down in half."
Including a dry towel in a tumble dryer alongside damp garments can accelerate drying by soaking up excess water and enhancing airflow, which could lead to energy savings.
Individuals who tossed a towel into the dryer for merely 15 minutes witnessed significant results.
One person declared: "3rd time I've seen this lately but yes, again, this works."
Another remarked: "I thought everyone did this. also spin a heavy load of washing twice."
A third chimed in: "100 percent! I usually do this with very small loads but I'm going all in now on every load!"
