Uttar Pradesh: Road safety once again came under scrutiny after two disturbing accidents were reported from different districts of Uttar Pradesh. Both incidents involved overspeeding vehicles and resulted in severe injuries, highlighting ongoing issues related to traffic discipline, enforcement, and public safety on busy roads and highways.

The first incident took place in Kannauj district, where a street vendor narrowly survived a horrific crash after being hit by a speeding car. The second accident occurred a day earlier in Jhansi, where a high-speed truck rammed into cars standing at a toll plaza, injuring multiple people including toll staff. Together, these incidents underline how negligence and lack of speed control can instantly turn routine moments into life-threatening situations.

Kannauj Accident: Street Vendor Hit by Out-of-Control Car
In Kannauj, a tragic road mishap unfolded in broad daylight, sending shockwaves through the local community. According to CCTV footage that later surfaced online, the incident occurred on January 18, 2026, at approximately 1:51 pm. A street cart vendor was walking along the road, pushing his cart in a routine manner, unaware of the danger approaching from behind.
Suddenly, a Wagon R car appeared at very high speed. The vehicle seemed to be completely out of control. Within seconds, the car slammed into the vendor with enormous force. The impact was so severe that the man was flung into the air and landed nearly 20 meters away from the point of collision. The footage clearly shows the violence of the crash and the vulnerability of pedestrians sharing the road with fast-moving vehicles.
Driver Flees the Scene After Collision
One of the most disturbing aspects of the Kannauj incident was the behavior of the car driver after the crash. Instead of stopping to help the injured man or alert authorities, the driver fled the scene immediately. This act not only worsened the situation for the victim but also raised serious legal and ethical questions.
Local residents rushed to assist the injured vendor, who was found lying on the road in critical condition. He was quickly taken to a nearby health centre, where doctors began emergency treatment. As of the latest updates, the victim remains seriously injured, and authorities are reportedly reviewing CCTV footage to identify and trace the vehicle involved.
Jhansi Toll Plaza Crash: High-Speed Truck Causes Chaos
In a separate but equally alarming incident, a speeding truck caused a major accident at a toll plaza in Jhansi district. This crash took place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, around 2:00 pm at the Semri Toll Plaza on the Kanpur Highway, under the jurisdiction of the Moth police station.
At the time of the accident, two cars were standing in line at the toll plaza, waiting for their FASTag to be scanned. Due to a technical issue with the scanner, the automated system was not functioning properly, forcing toll employees to manually scan vehicle tags.
Toll Employee Injured While on Duty
As a toll employee stepped forward to manually scan the FASTag of one of the waiting vehicles, a high-speed truck approached from behind without slowing down. Within moments, the truck crashed into both stationary cars with tremendous force. The impact was sudden and violent, leaving no time for anyone to react.
The toll employee was hit and thrown onto the bonnet of one of the cars. Several passengers sitting inside the vehicles also sustained injuries due to the collision. Panic spread across the toll plaza as workers and bystanders rushed to help the injured and call emergency services.
Overspeeding and Negligence Under Question
Both accidents point toward a common issue: overspeeding and lack of attention by drivers. In busy areas such as local roads and toll plazas, reduced speed and alertness are critical. The failure to follow traffic rules not only endangers drivers but also puts pedestrians, workers, and other commuters at serious risk.
Authorities have repeatedly emphasized the importance of speed limits, especially in zones where pedestrian movement and stationary vehicles are common. However, incidents like these suggest that enforcement and driver awareness still require significant improvement.
Growing Need for Road Safety Awareness
These back-to-back incidents serve as a grim reminder of how quickly lives can be altered due to careless driving. Improved traffic monitoring, stricter penalties for hit-and-run cases, and better safety infrastructure at toll plazas could help prevent similar accidents in the future.
Public awareness campaigns focusing on responsible driving, pedestrian safety, and adherence to traffic regulations are also essential. Until road users collectively prioritize safety over speed, such tragic incidents are likely to continue.
