A brutal murder has been reported from Karnataka’s Kolar district, where a 45-year-old priest was killed by unidentified miscreants late at night. The deceased has been identified as Anji, also known as Anjinappa, a priest associated with the Kali temple in Hulkuru village, near Harleri in Malur taluk.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of Pushya Amavasya. Anjinappa was returning home on his motorcycle after performing a special puja at the Kali temple. While passing through a deserted stretch of road near Harleri, the attackers, who were allegedly lying in wait, intercepted him.

Police said the assailants first threw chili powder into the priest’s eyes to incapacitate him and then assaulted him repeatedly using sticks and sharp weapons. Anjinappa died on the spot due to severe injuries. After committing the crime, the attackers fled the scene.

Attack Timed During Major Event

At the time of the murder, a Hindu Samajotsav was underway at Honda Stadium in Malur town. Due to the large gathering, a significant police force had been deployed for security arrangements. Investigators believe the accused took advantage of the reduced police presence in nearby areas to carry out the attack.

Police were informed about the murder towards the conclusion of the event, following which teams rushed to the spot.

Profile of the Deceased

Anjinappa was a resident of Malur and had established the Kali temple in Hulkuru village about five years ago. Apart from serving as a priest, he was known for practicing tantra-mantra, exorcism rituals, and traditional healing methods. He reportedly attracted devotees from across the state and also ran a straw business in Malur.

Personal Life and Controversies

Police have found that Anjinappa had two marriages. He married Vijayamma around 30 years ago and has two children from that marriage. About five years ago, he married Sangeeta, a resident of Bengaluru.

Investigators are also examining past disputes linked to the temple construction. There were allegations of encroachment on a village burial ground, which had reportedly led to tensions with some locals. Police are also exploring whether his tantric practices led to enmity with anyone.

Investigation Underway

A dog squad and forensic (SOCO) team examined the crime scene and collected evidence. The Malur police have registered a murder case and are investigating the incident from three primary angles: family disputes, financial dealings, and land-related conflicts. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused.
