How to grow an avocado at home Ingredients to grow avocado at homeFresh ripe avocado (choose one that’s soft when gently squeezed for the best pit)
Damp kitchen roll or tea towel (moist, not dripping)
Clear plastic bag or lidded container (a ziplock bag works fine, but don’t seal it completely)
Glass jar or vase (for the water method, if you want to watch the roots develop)
Toothpicks (three strong ones to suspend the seed)
20cm pot with drainage holes for later
Multi-purpose compost or houseplant potting mix
Spray bottle for misting.

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is extract the pit. Slice your ripe avocado in half lengthwise. Carefully twist out the stone—avoid knives near the seed to prevent damage.
Step 2: Once you have the avocado seed, rinse off any flesh under lukewarm water with a soft brush until clean, then pat dry.
Step 3: Now, there are two methods to grow the seed – paper towel or water. For the paper towel approach (quicker roots, less mess), wrap the seed in a damp kitchen roll, place it in a bag, and store it in a dark cupboard at room temperature (around 21°C). Check weekly and mist if needed. Or try the classic water method: insert three toothpicks evenly into the seed’s middle, suspend the bottom half in water over a jar on a sunny windowsill. Top up water and change it weekly to avoid bacteria.
Step 4: Now, it is time to wait and watch for sprouting. In 2-8 weeks, a crack will form at the pointy top—roots emerge from the flat bottom first (aim for 7-10cm long). Once you spot a 3cm root and shoot, it’s time to pot.
Step 5: To transplant the seed to soil, start prepping your pot. Fill your pot with compost, plant the seed roots-down (or sideways if they’ve twisted), leaving the top 2cm exposed. Firm the soil gently, water until it drains, and place in bright indirect light.
Step 6: Now it is time to provide care for growth. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. When the stem reaches 15-20cm, trim the top just above a leaf node to encourage bushiness. Feed with diluted liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer.
Tips for successful-
Warmth is essential—a south-facing window or heat mat helps if your space is cool; seeds dislike cold.
-
Be patient: fruit may take 5-10 years (consider grafting later for avocados), but the tree is gorgeous indoors.
-
Rotate the pot weekly for balanced growth, and pinch new shoots to maintain a fuller shape.
-
Yellow leaves often mean too much direct sun or overwatering—adjust accordingly. Brown tips signal low humidity; mist regularly.
-
Repot annually into a larger container as roots expand, and prune leggy stems for a tidier plant.
Your very own avocado tree is set to flourish and add a fresh vibe to your space! It’s an effortless project that turns everyday scraps into something special. Happy growing!
