Despite proving to be a one-hit wonder in the 1980s, Toni Basil swiftly became a household name and remains so to this day. Her song Mickey, taken from her 1981 debut album, stormed the charts and is still widely played more than four decades later.

Now aged 82, the singer, born Antonia Christina Basilotta, is still in the entertainment industry, working as a choreographer and dance instructor. Often appearing as a guest performer or a judge, Toni even appeared on US show, Dancing With The Stars last year to assist actress Elaine Hendrix and her partner, Alan Bersten in their Jive performance to Mickey.

Toni remains active on social media too, regularly sharing insights into her life and collaborations on Instagram. She recently shared a snap of herself alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov and Kenny Ortega attending the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame at the Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, California.

"Mikhail Baryshnikov, myself and Kenny Ortega at the Dance Hall of Fame," she wrote in a caption. "Kenny and Misha inducted, it was quite a night."

The post prompted Kenny to respond: "It was quite a night because you too were there. Thank you Toni for all you have been for me, and for all you have contributed to the evolution of dance."

Others, meanwhile, couldn't help but complement Toni, who looks incredible at 82, in a chic hat and scarf to complement her stylish look - albeit a far cry from her cheerleader outfit in the video for Mickey. "Legendary trip with Toni Basil serving looks, as usual!" one Instagram user gushed.

A second person praised: "Still stunning and so talented!" A third concurred: "You look absolutely stunning!"

Whilst a fourth Instagram user added: "Can we just accept that dancing is the fountain of youth? Toni has barely changed in 40 years! She's an absolute legend."

According to a recent interview in The Guardian, Toni currently lives alone "in a wonderful house in Los Angeles" with her five cats, having never married or had children. While follow-up singles to Mickey struggled in chart position, Toni said she was unfazed.

"I never thought of it as anything but a time period," she said. "It was just a train ride. I was able to earn a living, I had fabulous, talented friends that were all doing something similar, but like [David] Bowie, we all evolved.

"Dance styles change, music changes, so if you keep up with the trend, you change."

However, Toni went on to choreograph for other stars including Bette Midler, as well as for television shows and films such as Sesame Street, Legally Blonde and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

Toni even claims she taught superstars, Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio their 1960s moves.

"She was the goddess of go-go," Tarantino said at the time of her involvement. "She knows the era perfectly."
