Typically, when we talk about Artificial Intelligence (AI), our minds conjure up images of chatbots, beautiful pictures, or videos. But a piece of news from the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos has emerged that directly relates to our safety. Piyush Tiwari, founder of the SaveLIFE Foundation, says that AI can now prove to be a "game-changer" in preventing road accidents.
SaveLIFE's Mission Born from Personal Tragedy
Piyush Tiwari entered the field of road safety after losing a young family member in a road accident. Today, his organization is using AI to understand whether, by combining certain data points, we can predict where the next accident might occur.
A Major Initiative by the Indian Government
The Indian government is also fully supporting this mission. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently announced an initiative where AI will be used to analyze road accident data and find solutions as quickly as possible.
How Does This Technology Work?
The SaveLIFE Foundation has been working on this technology for the past 7-8 years. This technology uses AI cameras and drones to identify stationary vehicles on highways. Rear-end collisions are often caused by parked vehicles. Cameras at intersections identify how many times vehicles narrowly avoided collisions. This creates a heatmap, allowing for the early identification of dangerous areas.
According to founder Piyush Tiwari, safety changes that previously took months to implement can now be decided in a matter of hours or minutes with the help of AI.
The Path Ahead
Piyush Tiwari believes that AI must be made accessible to the general public. His mission is to bring this technology to the grassroots level to make roads safer. When data and technology join forces, perhaps the day is not far off when we will relegate road accidents to the pages of history.
