Taking advantage of bank locker facilities is quite common these days. Many people are using this service. However, sometimes a customer's bank locker key gets lost. Do you know how to get a duplicate key for your locker in such a situation? Will you have to pay a fee for this?
What do the bank rules say?
Losing your bank locker key doesn't compromise the security of your important documents, jewelry, or valuables. However, it can certainly cause inconvenience, as you won't be able to access your belongings when needed. You should know that your bank does not keep duplicate keys for your locker. But you need to know the procedure for opening the locker if the key is lost, which is governed by RBI regulations.
What is the procedure?
Bank officials explain that each bank locker has two different keys. The master key remains with the bank, while the other key is given to the customer. Both keys are unique; there are no duplicates. You always need both keys to open the locker. If you lose your key, you must contact the bank immediately. The bank will have you sign the necessary documents. After that, the process of obtaining a replacement key will begin.
Where does the replacement key come from?
A manager at a government bank, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that bank lockers are usually manufactured by Godrej. Some other companies also make them. When a customer loses their key, the locker number and model information are sent to the locker manufacturing company. The company's engineer or technician visits the bank branch. If a duplicate key for that locker is available or can be made, it is done. If not, the entire locker drawer is replaced. Written permission is obtained from the customer before breaking open the locker. The customer has to bear the entire cost of this process. This expense runs into thousands of rupees.
What to do if you lose your key
As soon as you realize that your locker key is lost, immediately inform your bank in writing. You may also be asked to provide an undertaking. The bank may also ask you to file an FIR for the lost key and submit it as part of their internal process. Further action will then be initiated. Please note that this process will take at least 15 days. It may even take longer.
