Chennai: In a sharp escalation of the ongoing rift between the Raj Bhavan and the state government, parties of the ruling DMK-led alliance—including the Congress, VCK, and Left parties—have announced a boycott of the customary Republic Day tea party hosted by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi. The move signals deepening political tensions and marks a public rejection of the Governor by the state’s ruling coalition.
Why the Boycott?
Alliance leaders have accused Governor Ravi of repeatedly undermining the elected government, disrespecting legislative traditions, and acting against Tamil Nadu’s interests. The decision follows a series of confrontations, including controversies over the Governor’s address, delays in approving bills, and his public remarks on cultural and educational policies.
Statements from Alliance Partners
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan condemned the Governor’s “deliberate violation of assembly traditions” and described his actions as an expression of aversion to Dravidian ideology by Sanatana forces. CPI(M) State Secretary Shanmugam cited the Governor’s “arbitrary conduct” and the Centre’s withholding of ‘Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan’ funds as reasons for the boycott. CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian accused Ravi of breaking and tarnishing long-standing good traditions, delaying bills, and pressuring universities over the New Education Policy. Tamil Nadu Congress chief Selva Perunthagai stated that Congress MLAs are boycotting because the Governor continues to betray the Tamil Nadu government and the people of Tamil Nadu.
Context of the Confrontation
The boycott is the latest in a string of public clashes between Governor Ravi and the DMK government over issues ranging from the Tamil Thai Vazhthu anthem in the assembly to his interventions in higher education and perceived overreach in legislative matters. The alliance’s collective snub is a symbolic political act aimed at isolating the Governor and reinforcing the state’s stance on federal autonomy.
