'I partied with Victoria and David Beckham at their house - this is what went down'

Brooklyn Beckham's fall out with parents Victoria and David rocked the sporting and celebrity world this week, with the eldest son releasing a lengthy statement on his Instagram story that detailed why he had estranged from them. He added that he will not be reconciling with them and it has left the family fractured.

While he would undoubtedly have preferred that this hadn't happened, father David was never far away from drama across his career as a footballer and celebrity. While there were negative controversies both on and off the field for Beckham as a player, perhaps his most positive and memorable moment was the iconic free-kick against Greece in 2001, which sent England to the World Cup the following year.

While the Beckham family name is currently the subject of much scrutiny, in the early 2000s there was a sharp contrast - they were the ultimate celebrity couple starting a young family with baby Brooklyn often snapped with them at matches. One person acutely aware of the glitz and glamour of their fame is former England international Danny Mills.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Mills spoke about the free-kick itself and the World Cup party that took place.

"I was in the squad – there were four or five of us watching that goal from the tunnel, it was an incredible moment," he said. "Had that not gone in, I might not have played at a World Cup."

On the party, he added: "I remember being invited to a World Cup party at his house – it was a little extravagant. The invitations came around in early 2002 – white tie and diamonds was the dress code!

"I didn’t even own a black tie, let alone a white one, and I certainly didn’t have any diamonds! That was an eye-opener, the world of the famous, I guess.

"But I did go along. We had a table at the back of the room for the players – the celebrities that were there from all different walks of life were way more forward than us.

"Allegedly the party was for the players, but I’m not sure it was… I spent most of the time with my lad in the kids’ play tent!"

It was disappointment for England at the World Cup, though, exiting at the quarter-final stage in Japan and South Korea. Mills himself won five of his 19 England caps in the Far East.

Born in March 1999, son Brooklyn would have been just three years old when the World Cup took place. Now 26, he didn't follow in the footsteps of his father, walking away from football in 2015 after being released by Arsenal.

Leaving sport behind, Brooklyn would realise his passion for photography before delving into the world of cooking. Naturally, being a Beckham, he is a social media star with almost 17 million followers on Instagram. He spent much of his life navigating the 'white ties and diamonds' of his parents' world but has now seemingly had enough.

Earlier this week, he posted his bombshell statement to these 17 million followers. "I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private," he said.

"Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.

"I do not want to reconcile with my family. I'm not being controlled, I'm standing up for myself for the first time in my life."
