Banh mi heo quay, Vietnamese sandwich stuffed with roasted pork belly, surpassed Vietnam’s iconic dishes such as pho and bun bo Hue to top a list of 100 best Vietnamese dishes, according to a ranking by global food magazine TasteAtlas.
This result is compiled from nearly 8,500 reviews from diners and experts, of which more than 5,500 reviews were verified by the system based on criteria identifying actual users.
TasteAtlas describes the roast pork sandwich as a combination of two beloved ingredients: the traditional crispy bread crust and crispy-skinned roast pork belly, offering a more diverse experience compared to the usual cold meat filling.
Roasted pork banh mi also ranks second in TasteAtlas’s recent list of the best sandwiches in the world.
The highlight of the dish is the crispy pork skin, while the meat inside remains tender and juicy, the magazine says.
The “soul” of this dish is the sauce made from pork broth seasoned with local spices, it adds.
Herbal ingredients like pickles, cilantro, cucumber, and fresh chili peppers balance the flavors.
Bun bo Nam Bo (southern-style beef noodles), fresh rice vermicilli mixed with stir-fried beef and herbs, ranked second, followed by beef pho, highly praised for its broth simmered from beef bones, shanks, and oxtail, combined with a variety of rare and well-done beef cuts.
Quang noodles and dipping sauce held the 4th and 5th positions respectively.
The presence of dipping sauce on the list shows that international diners appreciate the role of the combination of fish sauce, lime, sugar, and chili garlic in Vietnamese-style meals.
TasteAtlas emphasizes that these results are not based on subjective opinions but are filtered through an algorithmic system capable of identifying real users and eliminating fake reviews to ensure objectivity.
