The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to completely revamp its digital services. Its website and system are undergoing a major overhaul. This will include a new portal, an AI-based language translation tool, and several new features. This transformation comes at a time when the EPFO recently announced relaxed withdrawal rules and the introduction of UPI-related facilities.
An official stated that the entire system will be transformed under EPFO 3.0. A new technical framework will be created, a core banking solution will be implemented in the backend, and the portal will be completely redesigned. This will enable better service delivery to both organized and unorganized sector employees. The system is being designed keeping in mind the future increase in the number of users and transaction volume. Currently, EPFO has approximately 80 million active members and manages a fund of nearly ₹28 lakh crore.
What changes will be made?
According to government officials, the new system will include:
A completely new portal and backend software
AI-based tools for providing information in various Indian languages
A more centralized system
A core banking system-like structure to make processes faster and easier
This transformation is part of the preparation to cover employees in the unorganized sector under the new labor codes. EPFO may also manage the funds of unorganized workers in the future.
UPI facility for EPF withdrawals
EPFO is now working on a facility that will allow employees to withdraw their EPF money through UPI. Reports suggest that the ministry is working on a system where a portion of the EPF amount will remain secure (frozen), and the remaining amount can be transferred directly to the bank account via UPI. If everything goes according to plan, this facility could be launched by April 2026. After this, subscribers will be able to view their available balance and easily withdraw money by entering their UPI PIN. Overall, this digital transformation by EPFO is considered a major step towards making services more convenient, faster, and transparent for millions of employees.
