'He needs just one innings' - Parthiv Patel backs Suryakumar Yadav to find form ahead of 2026 T20 WC

Former wicketkeeper batter Parthi Patel has backed strugglingSuryakumar Yadav to find rhythm and form ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup starting on February 7. The Indian captain played a cameo in the first T20I against New Zealand.

The Men in Blue bounced back strongly after an ODI series loss against the Blackcaps. After being asked to bat first, the hosts wreaked havoc with the bat as they posted a mammoth total of 238 in their 20 overs, thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s breathtaking knock of 84 runs off just 35 balls. Suryakumar, who had a horrid 2025 with the bat, also played a decent knock.

The Gujarat Titans assistant coach reflected upon the right-hander’s batting approach and stated that a big innings is just around the corner for him, and Suryakumar just needs to spend time in the middle.

"You benefit a lot because you know that runs are coming from one end. Then you can take your time and Suryakumar Yadav needs to do that. Obviously, we talk about runs, but in these five T20I matches, Suryakumar needs to spend time in the middle," Patel said on Star Sports.

"He is himself saying that he is batting well. That means he is feeling good, but you need runs behind you. Once he plays 20 balls and 40 balls in the next match, then it does not take that much time for a batter of this quality. It doesn't look like he needs the entire series to return to form. He needs just one inning and this is probably the start," he concluded.

Harbhajan Singh backs Indian captain

In the same conversation, legendary off-spinnerHarbhajan Singh, too, joined Patel, backing the Mumbai batter. He believes that this is the way Suryakumar bats, and it is normal to have a lean path in anyone’s career.

"The way I have seen his career, he has been batting like this only. You go through such lean patches many times. You should never let it come into your mind whether you are capable enough or whether you are making some mistakes," he said.

India completely dominated the Kiwis en route to their 48-run victory in the opening encounter. They will now look to keep the winning momentum going ahead of the multi-national tournament.
