Guwahati, Jan 22: On Thursday, the District and Sessions Judge’s court wrapped up the hearings regarding the bail requests of three individuals implicated in the Zubeen Garg death case, with a decision expected on January 30.

Among the five individuals who sought bail, extensive arguments were presented for Amritprava Mahanta, Paresh Baishya, and Nandeshwar Bora.

The bail requests from the other two accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, were retracted after their lawyers informed the court that they were not pursuing bail at this time.

Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar indicated that the prosecution had no objections to the withdrawal of these two bail applications.

However, Kamar and his team submitted written objections against the bail requests of Mahanta, Bora, and Baishya.

Advocate Apurba Kumar Sharma, who serves as the general secretary of the Lawyers’ Association in Guwahati, confirmed that the arguments regarding the three bail applications have been finalized.

“The hearing for the bail applications of Amritprava Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya has concluded today. The court has reserved its decision, which will be announced on January 30. The other bail requests were withdrawn,” Sharma stated.

During the proceedings, Garima Garg, the wife of the deceased, and Pami Barthakur, his sister, were present in court. After the hearing, Garima expressed satisfaction with the progress made.

“We are pleased with today’s hearing. The bail hearing for three accused was completed, while two bail petitions were withdrawn. We will know the outcome on January 30,” she remarked.

Previously, on January 10, the Assam Cabinet had formed a five-member legal team, led by Special Public Prosecutor Kamar, to handle the prosecution in this high-profile case.

This team includes Brojendra Mohan Choudhury as an additional special public prosecutor, along with Kishore Dutta, Pranjal Dutta, and Vikash Jammar as assistant special public prosecutors.

Additionally, proceedings related to the case have begun in Singapore’s coroner’s court.

During a hearing on January 14, Assistant Superintendent of Police David Lim from the Police Coast Guard testified that Garg, aged 53, had consumed alcohol and repeatedly declined to wear a life vest before jumping into the water from a yacht.

With the court reserving its decision, attention now turns to January 30, when it will rule on the bail applications of the three accused.
