Chirang, Jan 22: As the Assam Assembly elections draw near, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) announced on Thursday that it will finalize its alliance strategy later this month after crucial organizational discussions.

During a press conference in Chirang, UPPL president Pramod Boro stated that the party's stance on potential alliances, including any collaborations with other political entities, will be determined at the Central Executive Committee meeting on January 24, followed by the Central Conference on January 30 and 31.

“Our Central Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for January 24, and the Central Conference will take place on January 30 and 31. Various matters are currently under review, but the ultimate decision regarding political alliances will be made during the Central Conference,” Boro explained.

However, the likelihood of a partnership between UPPL and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) seems slim.

Previously, on January 4, BPF president and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary explicitly dismissed any collaboration with UPPL in the region.

Mohilary indicated that while UPPL's involvement might be acceptable at the state or national level, it does not have a role in the Bodoland Territorial Council.

“UPPL has been part of the NDA at both the state Assembly and the Centre, but not within the BTC. If the BJP opts to collaborate with UPPL at the state or central level, we have no objections. However, UPPL has no claim in the BTC,” Mohilary stated.

Reaffirming his position, Mohilary emphasized that there is no possibility of cooperation between the two parties in the Bodoland area.

In the meantime, regarding the recent unrest in Kokrajhar, Boro mentioned that the situation was stabilized within a day due to the collective efforts of all involved parties.

He expressed gratitude to the Assam Police and the district administration for their swift action.

“It is commendable that the incident was managed within a day. We were concerned when it happened, but thanks to the Assam Police and the authorities, along with everyone’s intervention, the situation was brought under control,” Boro remarked.
