At a conference in Lahore on March 23, 1940, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, considered the founder of Pakistan, demanded a separate Muslim state. The Executive Committee of the All India Muslim League led by Jinnah passed the Lahore Resolution. This proposal later became the foundation of the creation of Pakistan (1947).

After partition, on August 15, 1947, Jinnah became the first Governor General of Pakistan. The transfer of power was done by Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India. Under the Mountbatten Plan, after the partition of India and Pakistan, both the countries were given Dominion status. After gaining independence from Islamabad in 1971, the eastern part of Pakistan became Bangladesh.
