Former Three Lions star Paul Gascoigne has revealed a recent health scare left him "really panicking" and in "agony" as he was rushed to hospital. Gascoigne, who is 58 years old, suffered a nasty accident over the festive period, which left him with six broken ribs.
It was the latest in a line of recent health problems for the Euro '96 icon, who has also battled alcohol addiction throughout his life. As a player, the ex-Tottenham, Rangers and Lazio ace was considered one of the best playmakers of his generation.
And during a segment with Clutch 9 for a documentary, he said: "I was hanging something up and I fell backwards. I broke six ribs and I punctured a couple of lungs. I go to the hospital and I'm in agony obviously and they give me some pain relief. I just felt my neck getting bigger. I got the surgeon in quickly because I was panicking.
"I could see my dad in the clouds and I was really panicking. I've had 38 operations so this normally doesn't bother me, but this time I was really s******g myself. I was saying, 'please get the surgeon.' I was crying my eyes out!"
It came just months after he was taken to hospital in the summer after being found semi-conscious by a friend in his Dorset home. Gazza was admitted to an intensive care ward as a result, but was later moved to a regular medical unit.
Carly Saward from the MNT talent agency said at the time: "Paul voluntarily went into A&E on Friday after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while. He is already back home and doing well."
While his feiend and PA, Steve Foster, told The Sun: "Paul is stable now but is still very poorly. But it shows how popular and loved he still is by fans everywhere. I can't walk down the street with him without him being stopped - it's crazy."
On his relationship with alcohol, he said on the High Performance podcast in March 2024: "I used to be a happy drunk, I ain't any more ... I'm a sad drunk. I don't go out and drink, I drink indoors. If I want to make it a bad day, [all I need to do is] go down the pub. If I want it to be a good day, I get my flying rod out and go fishing."
