Former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh has called on the Sydney Sixers to consider dropping Babar Azam for their upcoming match against the Hobart Hurricanes. This clash is crucial, as the winner of the second qualifier will face the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL) final, making it a significant game for both teams.
Babar’s underwhelming BBL season
Babar's debut season in the BBL has been less than stellar, with only 202 runs from 11 innings and a strike rate of 103.06. He has managed to score two half-centuries, with his highest score being 58. Unfortunately, he was dismissed for a two-ball duck against the Scorchers in the first qualifier on Tuesday.
Waugh suggests that the Sixers should rethink their batting lineup. He proposed bringing in either Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk, both of whom have plenty of experience and can contribute vital runs for the team.
“I think they need a bit of tough love and a rejig in their batting because, right now, it’s almost entirely reliant on Steve Smith. Sam Curran got them out of a tight spot in another game, but he’s gone, and at the moment, there aren’t many players in form. So, I’m looking at bringing in either Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk,” Waugh told Fox Sports.
“Unfortunately, I’m going to have to drop Babar Azam. I know he’s world-class, but at the top of the order, he hasn’t delivered consistently enough. When you’re thinking about winning this tournament, you need your openers firing, and so far, he just hasn’t done it," he added.

He also mentioned that Babar could be replaced as the opener by either Hughes, Silk, or Moises Henriques. Waugh believes this change would not only bolster the batting order but also enhance the overall strength of the team, which could be a game-changer in their playoff match against the Hurricanes on January 23.
In summary, Mark Waugh’s insights shed light on the tough choices the Sydney Sixers face as they prepare for a pivotal BBL qualifier against the Hobart Hurricanes. With Babar Azam struggling to make a mark in his first season, Waugh feels that adjusting the batting order could be beneficial.
Introducing seasoned players like Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk, or shifting roles with Moises Henriques at the top, might provide the stability and aggression needed. As the Sixers strive for a spot in the final, making the right selection could be crucial for their success.
