The Karnataka High Court has reversed a ban on bike taxi services in the state imposed by it in April last year.
A division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi lifted the ban today while hearing appeals filed by Ola, Uber and Rapido challenging the April 2025 order, Bar and Bench reported.
A single-judge bench of Justice B Shyam Prasad ordered these companies last year to halt bike taxi operations in Karnataka until the government framed laws governing and permitting them.
The HC has now asked the operators to file applications to register two-wheelers as transport vehicles or taxis. It noted that while the ultimate authority to accept the application lies with the state government, it can’t forbid any vehicle from applying for registration on the mere grounds that it is a motorcycle.
“We direct the state government to consider such applications for registration of the owner of vehicles as transport vehicles and grant permission to operate as contract carriages. While concerned authority are not precluded from examining the relevant aspects, the same will not be denied on the ground that motorcycles cannot be operated as transport vehicles or contract carriages,” the order said.
