Arsenal get transfer update as shock move 'considered' after wonderkid target passes audition
Football | January 23, 2026 5:41 PM CST

Arsenal are poised to confirm two January signings, despite much of the club's attention being on the upcoming summer transfer window. Sporting director Andrea Berta secured several shrewd deals to improve Mikel Arteta's squad last summer, meaning departures have become the focus this month.

Initially, securing regular playing time for Ethan Nwaneri appeared to be the priority, before the transfer window opened, but it quickly became clear he would remain at the club.

However, Arsenal appear to have identified an ideal loan destination at Marseille, with Arteta an admirer of Roberto De Zerbi's philosophy - and the former Brighton boss keen to deploy him as an attacking midfielder.

Meanwhile, Oleksandr Zinchenko is heading for a permanent switch to Ajax, with his current Nottingham Forest loan spell being terminated early. Despite substantial recruitment being completed before the current campaign, Berta is almost certainly continuing to identify unique opportunities in the market.

Future prospects are likely tracked throughout the calendar year, as well, with one such talent recently sending an encouraging message to Arteta. Arsenal have seldom failed to land their targets during the Spaniard's reign, though one player they were unable to secure could surprisingly be heading to Chelsea...

With all of that in mind, football.london has compiled the latest Arsenal transfer news and speculation from the January window;

Shock move 'considered' for ex-Arsenal target

Chelsea are weighing up a potential approach for Douglas Luiz, who is currently on loan at Forest from Juventus, according to The Athletic.

The Brazil player has fallen out of favour under Sean Dyche, with his display in their loss to Braga unlikely to have improved his standing.

Chelsea are short of options in the middle of the park, with Moises Caicedo rarely given a breather when fit, while Enzo Fernandez has been deployed in a more advanced role as Cole Palmer's game-time is carefully monitored.

Arsenal made attempts to secure Luiz during his stint with Aston Villa, with three unsuccessful bids in the summer transfer window of 2022. He later moved to Juventus two years on, but his Italian adventure didn't quite pan out as expected, leading to his temporary return to the Premier League last summer.

Should the transfer materialise, he would not be able to face Arsenal in the second leg of the Carabao Cup at the Emirates Stadium.

Wonderkid delivers perfect transfer message

Vasilije Kostov passed his Arsenal transfer audition by netting the winning aol for FK Crvena Zvezda in their Europa League encounter with Malmo - a match attended by Arsenal scouts, football.london understands.

The 17-year-old midfielder, nicknamed the 'Balkan Barella', found himself unmarked at the far post before sliding the ball home, propelling his team up to tenth in the standings.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the youngster, with the latter German side dispatching scouts to Serbia on Thursday night. Red Star Belgrade's general director, Zvezdan Terzic, has since provided a telling update on Kostov's situation.

Speaking to football.london, he said: "I can't talk about exactly who has called, but we have already received an offer worth €20million (£17.45million) for him. Of course [he can play in the Premier League], but not just any team, he could play for one of the big six clubs."
