There is a little-known hack that can save you hundreds when booking your next hotel break online. January is a peak time for booking getaways for the year as we seek a change of scenery.
But, searching for the perfect hotel can feel like a minefield and travellers want to ensure they are getting the best deal possible. There are plenty of booking sites to choose from, with each offering different prices. Thankfully, travel experts have shared their special hack that can save holidaymakers around 20%.
Experts at consumer site Which? have revealed that popular travel websites charge more depending on the device you are booking on. The likes of Booking.com, Expedia and Hotels.com often charge more if you book on a computer over a mobile phone.
They say the simple switch of using your phone to book can save up to 20%. And, they put their finding to the test.
The Which? expert explained: "More and more sites like Booking.com, Expedia and Hotels.com are offering mobile-only deals on some stays to encourage people to book on the spot."
They managed to save £270 off the price of a two-night stay in an apartment in Amsterdam on Booking.com by using this hack. "It's such an easy switch, but it can make a real difference to your travel budget," the expert added.
They also put the hack to the test on Expedia, and managed to save £60 on a weekend in Edinburgh.
Another hack travellers can use when booking hotels is to clear your browsing cookies when you have found your perfect stay. You should clear the cookies and cache or use a private window before searching for the exact same hotel again.
The price can be significantly lower than what you were just looking at. This is because booking sites tend to use dynamic pricing and tailor your results when they know you are interested in a specific hotel.
Wiping the cache and cookies can give yourself a clean slate to search again without the dynamic pricing. The day you search for your holiday can also have an impact, as Tuesdays tend to have lower prices.
When it comes to when to go away, Sunday to Thursday tends to be cheaper as you skip the weekend surge.
