On Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grave concerns regarding the ongoing voter list revision process, stating that it has led to the tragic suicides of three to four individuals daily. Speaking at an event on the occasion of Subhas Chandra Bose's birth anniversary at Red Road in Kolkata, she emphasized that the Election Commission and the central government should be held accountable for these deaths. Banerjee reported that over 110 individuals have lost their lives due to the stress associated with the voter list revision process.

She reiterated that the ongoing voter list revision (SIR) is causing significant distress, resulting in daily suicides. As the state prepares for upcoming assembly elections, the SIR process has become a focal point of concern.

Allegations Against BJP

Mamata Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of conspiring against West Bengal, claiming that the legacies of revered figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Bose, and B.R. Ambedkar are being disrespected. Earlier this week, she highlighted that the tension and fear surrounding the SIR process have contributed to at least 110 fatalities. During the inauguration of the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair, she announced that her 162nd book, which includes a collection of 26 poems reflecting the pain caused by the SIR process, would be published at the fair.

Banerjee pointed out that hundreds of elderly individuals are forced to wait in long lines for hearings at special intensive revision camps, often enduring five to six hours outdoors. She criticized the Election Commission for raising issues related to Bengali surnames, which have been known and accepted for years, citing logical inconsistencies.
