Kundalpur Jain Tirtha, located in Nalanda district of Bihar, is a holy place where faith, history and spirituality come together. This is considered to be the same place where Lord Mahavir Swami, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, was born. For this reason, this place is a center of reverence and devotion for the followers of Jainism. - According to the Jain sect, it is believed that Mahavir Swami (24th Tirthankara) was born in Kundalpur.
- Furthermore, many of his prominent disciples (Ganadharas) are believed to have been born or attained nirvana here, such as Gautam Swami etc.
- There are about six major temples in the temple complex and the idols of 72 Jinas are installed in a separate building.
Mythology and beliefs to Kundalpur
It is said that Kundalpur was also the ancient capital of Licchavi dynasty and it was an area rich in religious yoga. According to Jain scriptures, Mahavir Swami performed his rituals and penances here as his birthplace. For this reason the sanctity of this place is special in Jainism. Pilgrims believe that darshan and worship here helps in attaining salvation.
Features of temple and architecture
- The new temple complex here was constructed by the people of Jain community in the 2000s in which Jaisalmer stone has been used.
- The ancient temple is situated at a place called ‘Singhamukhi Tila’ and a 4.5 feet high statue of Lord Mahavir is situated there.
- Kundalpur Tirtha has restaurants and darshan facilities including Dharamshala.

Nearest Airport: The nearest airport to Kundalpur is Patna, which is about 110 km from here.
Nearest Railway Station: It can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes by road after Nalanda or Rajgir railway station.
Road route: Regular buses and taxis are available from Biharsharif, Nalanda, Rajgir.
