Liverpool could use Tottenham's interest in Andy Robertson to strike a blockbuster swap deal that would leave the Reds in a better position. It emerged on Friday morning that Spurs had reached out to the Anfield giants to discuss a potential January move for Robertson. They were initially planning to sign him on a free transfer in the summer but have ultimately decided to accelerate their interest.
It's been reported that discussions have already taken place, with Liverpool open to a January sale. They are prepared to let Robertson leave if he decides that he wants a new challenge, rather than stand in his way. Things are said to be progressing smoothly behind the scenes, but no agreement has been reached as of yet.
With nothing in the pipeline at the moment, Liverpool could decide to take advantage of Tottenham's interest to secure the services of Micky van de Ven in a stroke of transfer genius.
The defender has emerged as one of the Premier League's finest centre-backs since joining Spurs from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023.
His blistering pace gives him an edge over other players in his position and he regularly puts it to good use, racing up the pitch to contribute in attack and score goals.
Van de Ven is also an astute defender and would be the perfect replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who is facing an uncertain future at Liverpool as he approaches the end of his contract.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Van de Ven was pushing to leave Tottenham with the aim of joining an elite club in the Premier League or in Europe.
Liverpool would certainly fit that description and have already been linked with his signature, but Spurs won't consider selling for anything less than £100million, according to talkSPORT.
In order to drive that price tag down and make a deal more feasible, the Reds could throw Robertson into a part-exchange proposal and hope Tottenham are willing to accept.
Given that they are interested in bringing the Scottish full-back to north London, it could be a deal to suit all parties.
However, such a move would see Tottenham lose their best defender without signing a like-for-like replacement. With deadline day fast approaching, they wouldn't have long to get somebody in before the window slams shut.
As a result, it seems unlikely that a swap deal involving Robertson and Van de Ven would be a realistic outcome, but stranger things have happened in football.
