Andy Murray is said to take Fantasy Premier League very seriously, after retiring from playing tennis 18 months ago. British wheelchair tennis player Andy Lapthorne has revealed that the three-time Grand Slam champion is just as good at the game as he was on the court.

The topic of managing a fantasy (FPL) football team while in Melbourne for the Australian Open arose during BBC Radio 5 Live's Tennis Breakfast on day six. Lapthorne said: "We're in some serious leagues with some of the tennis boys that take it very seriously."

Asked by the presenter, Gigi Salmon, who takes it most seriously, Lapthorne immediately replied: "Andy Murray, by far, he's playing a different game to everyone else. Usually, when we play, he's winning."

Murray has previously posted about his prowess at FPL on social media. Months before announcing his retirement from tennis, the Scotsman posted on X (was Twitter) about winning a mini-league with several other tennis players.

He posted a screenshot of his team and league standings with the caption: "Team for the final gameweek of the season, with it all wrapped up. Thanks for another season, lads, you are all absolutely clueless."

Murray tagged several players, past and present, in the post, including his brother Jamie. The others were Cameron Norrie, Dominic Inglot, Jonny O'Mara, Ken Skupski, Lapthorne, Luke Bambridge, Neal Skupski and Ryan Peniston.

He also spoke to Fantasy Premier League about their game a year earlier. Murray highlighted Neal Skupski as another player who takes FPL seriously.

The Scotsman said: "He puts more time in than anyone else. His knowledge isn't that high-level, but he will spend hours on the apps and the websites, trying to get an edge, but he never manages to win."

Murray beat Neal Skupski by just three points in a draft league during the 2021/22 season. Posting a screenshot of the standings, once again on X, he said: "If you thought the end of the Premier League season was exciting, it was nothing in comparison to our Fantasy Premier League final day.

"Nice to obliterate Neal Skupski in the dying stages. Guy tries so hard and is still an absolute (rabbit emoji) though.

Fantasy Premier League also asked Murray to pick between finishing as world No.1 in the game, earning another Olympic gold medal or winning Wimbledon again. He said: "I'd probably go with Wimbledon, but it's tight between the three of them. It's close. I'm not exactly sure how well I finished [in my best season], but I did pretty well. I was in the top 100,000, I think, so that's a pretty decent result."
