Man Utd's Marcus Rashford options – Barcelona swap deal to Old Trafford comeback

Questions continue to swirl around Marcus Rashford's future following the managerial change at Manchester United. Rashford's Red Devils career appeared to be over after his fallout with Ruben Amorim, which resulted in him being excluded from the first-team squad and loaned out to Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona.

However, Amorim's dismissal has potentially changed the situation. Michael Carrick, who has both played alongside and coached Rashford, will be hoping to do enough work to secure the position permanently come summer.

At present, United appear more inclined to pursue a top-level manager to guide the team into the next campaign. But what does this mean for Rashford? Mirror Football looks at the options...

Sold this summer

United are still thought to be eager to cash in on Rashford, whose Barcelona loan arrangement includes a purchase option for around £26million.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick recently commended Rashford's "really good" displays this season but confirmed no decision had been made regarding a permanent acquisition. Other clubs will certainly be monitoring the situation, although remaining with Barcelona would be his preferred choice.

Given the 28-year-old's contract runs only until 2028, that £26m fee would realistically drop over time, making the upcoming window an ideal opportunity to maximise returns, especially considering his homegrown status for PSR purposes.

Swap deal

United have reportedly shown interest in Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado, who is understood to be open to a Premier League switch.

With Casemiro's summer departure confirmed and Manuel Ugarte also linked with an exit, the position sits at the top of their transfer wishlist. This opens up the prospect of a potential swap arrangement involving Rashford. With both players carrying comparable valuations, a deal could potentially be hammered out in the summer.

However, this would depend on Casado remaining a Barcelona player at season's end. The 22-year-old is being monitored by Atletico Madrid, who are seeking a midfielder following Conor Gallagher's sale to Tottenham.

Another loan

This would essentially be delaying the inevitable but remains a possibility and might make greater financial sense for Barcelona.

Another season-long loan could be arranged with an obligation to purchase in summer 2027. The stumbling block in this scenario would be determining the exact fee. Given the £26m figure has already been established, accepting significantly less would make little sense from United's standpoint.

On the flip side, it does once again remove his substantial £325k-a-week wages from the books for another year, creating room for some vital summer acquisitions.

Return to United

Despite Amorim's departure, this still appears the most unlikely outcome. Rashford has made it evident he is content at Barcelona, while a complete separation from United may be best for both sides.

Nevertheless, a comeback cannot be completely dismissed following the managerial change. The next permanent boss, whether it's Carrick or another candidate, may look to bring the forward back into the fold.
