Shoppers have voted for the best value supermarket in the UK, with Lidl falling short of the title. Many of us like to keep an eye on our purse strings while doing the weekly grocery shop, so it is important to feel like we are getting value for money.

The annual Good Housekeeping Food Awards have returned for 2026, as over 1,600 readers voted for the winners. They had their say on everything from the 'best in-store experience' to the 'best fresh produce' and the 'best to impress guests'. One of the most important awards was their Best Value Supermarket.

The voters gave the award to Aldi, and praised the supermarket for its affordability and range of produce. Aldi beat Lidl to the top spot, but it's not the first time they have been pitted against each other.

The two supermarkets are often going head-to-head thanks to their low prices. However, the voters didn't put Lidl in second place and instead gave the runner-up award to Sainsbury's.

One shopper said: "Aldi is my go-to for an affordable weekly shop." Another added: "They don't do meal deals - they just sell good products at great prices."

Aldi was also crowned Favourite Supermarket as part of the 2026 awards. Again, shoppers praised its price points and quality of produce as the reason for victory.

A shopper explained their vote: "I find Aldi really convenient to shop, and the staff are always super friendly." Sainsbury's was the runner-up for this award too.

When it comes to Favourite Premium Supermarket Range, the shoppers selected Marks & Spencer's Our Best Ever. When looking for something special and a nice treat, many said they opted for the M&S premium range.

"M&S is my go-to for luxury items, including flowers and sweet treats," one said. Sainsbury's Taste the Difference range came as runner-up for the award.

Aldi also came out on top of the Which? cheapest supermarket for 2025 research. The consumer website monitored the cost of groceries at all the UK's biggest supermarkets every day over the past year.

They discovered Aldi was the cheapest supermarket for 10 out of 12 months of the year. For the two months they missed out, Lidl was the cheapest.

Both supermarkets are close, as overall Lidl charged 77p more than Aldi on average each month.
