Andy Robertson has already delivered a clear message to Thomas Frank as Tottenham engage in discussions with Liverpool regarding a January move. The 31-year-old was thought to be a summer target for Spurs when his contract was set to expire, but plans have been accelerated by several months due to Ben Davies' injury.

Milos Kerkez's arrival at Anfield has reduced Robertson's playing time, with the Scotland captain weighing up his options whilst being fully aware of his requirements for his next career step. He revealed to BBC Sport earlier this month: "Yes [I would like to stay at Liverpool], but it's a difficult question.

"I've got five months left and we need to see what the option is to stay - or if there's options to go and things like that. I need to sit down with my family and decide.

"After a stressful summer, I'm just trying to enjoy being a part of it and being a Liverpool player.

"I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and, thankfully, we've managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants going forward."

Robertson signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2017 from Hull City for a modest £8million, and he has undoubtedly repaid that investment with two Premier League crowns and one Champions League triumph amongst his standout accomplishments.

However, he has become the understudy to Kerkez over recent weeks with the Hungary international appearing much more assured lately, following a challenging start to his Merseyside career.

This has led to Robertson featuring for just 181 minutes since mid-December and he proceeded to make a frank acknowledgement regarding his playing time ambitions.

"I can focus on the last eight-and-a-half years," Robertson responded when questioned if minutes during the forthcoming months will influence his future decisions.

"I think Jurgen Klopp left me out for one game and I was raging. So I'm a player who wants to play. I've played through injuries. I've played when I'm not 100 per cent fit.

"I've played when I've only been 50/40/30 per cent fit for this club and for my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that's not happening, so that's what is different.

"I have a different role here this season, which I'm getting enjoyment out of but, at the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don't belong at any football club.

"That's always my argument, you should always want to push to be in the team. If you're happy to sit on the bench, then I don't think you have the right attitude.

"I think I've played well in the games I've played this season. Maybe I've not played as much as I would have liked, but it's nothing I've been surprised by. Let's see what happens."

It certainly appears that a transfer to Spurs this month is on the cards, despite the north London club confirming the signing of Brazilian left-back Souza earlier this week.

Destiny Udogie, having only recently recovered from injury, is expected to be the preferred choice for that position, but Robertson will most probably feature for the rest of the campaign.
