Snowfall Impact In Uttarakhand’s Hill Districts

Heavy snow accumulation was reported in the higher reaches of Nainital, Uttarkashi, and Tehri Garhwal districts. Key mountain roads became impassable, resulting in vehicles being stuck at multiple locations. Travelers, local residents, and tourists faced extreme cold conditions as snowfall intensified late into the night, increasing the risk of accidents and exposure-related emergencies.

Swift Response By Disaster Management Teams

Based on inputs from district control rooms and disaster management departments, specialized rescue teams were mobilized without delay. The State Disaster Response Force played a critical role in handling the situation efficiently. Their timely coordination ensured that stranded individuals received immediate assistance despite challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions.

Rescue Operations In Ramgarh And Mukteshwar Region

One of the major rescue efforts took place in the Ramgarh–Mukteshwar belt, where snow had completely blocked road access. Teams deployed heavy machinery to remove snow layers and create safe passage. In the Dhanachuli Band area, a mechanical excavator was used to clear roads, allowing approximately 20 to 25 stranded vehicles to be safely evacuated along with their passengers.

Vehicle And Passenger Evacuation Near Ghansali

Another successful operation was carried out near Badiyar village on the Mayali Road. A rescue unit stationed at Ghansali assisted eight individuals who were trapped in their vehicle due to heavy snowfall. The group, returning from a wedding ceremony, was safely escorted to Ghansali town, where they were provided shelter and basic assistance.

Large-Scale Evacuation In Uttarkashi District

In Uttarkashi, adverse weather conditions affected the Lambgaon Motor Road in the Chaurangi area. Around 75 people were stranded as snow piled up rapidly, blocking movement. Rescue teams evacuated all affected individuals and shifted them to secure locations, ensuring that no one remained exposed to freezing temperatures overnight.

No Casualties Reported Amid Harsh Conditions

Authorities confirmed that all rescue operations were conducted smoothly and in coordination with local administrations. Despite widespread disruption and difficult weather conditions, no loss of life or serious injuries were reported. Officials praised the preparedness and rapid response of rescue personnel working under extreme circumstances.

Widespread Winter Conditions Across Northern India

The impact of winter weather was not limited to Uttarakhand. Several parts of northern India experienced intense cold waves, with snowfall reported in multiple regions. These conditions led to transportation challenges, power supply issues in remote areas, and increased demand for emergency services.

Himachal Pradesh Faces Massive Road Closures

In neighboring Himachal Pradesh, heavy snowfall caused extensive damage to road infrastructure. According to officials, 535 roads were closed across the state, including four National Highways. Snow clearance operations were initiated on a war footing to restore connectivity and minimize disruption to essential services.

Snow Clearance Strategy And Machinery Deployment

The state’s public works department deployed a large fleet of machinery to tackle snow-covered roads. A total of 264 machines, including departmental and hired excavators, dozers, robotic equipment, and transport vehicles, were engaged in clearance operations. Engineers and field officers were instructed to prioritize time-bound restoration of key routes.

Road Restoration Timeline And Estimated Loss

Out of the total closed roads, a significant number were village and district roads. Officials indicated that nearly 199 roads could reopen by January 23, while others may take additional time due to heavy accumulation. The estimated financial loss caused by snowfall has been assessed at approximately Rs 6.03 crore, reflecting damage to infrastructure and public assets.

Authorities Remain On High Alert

With weather conditions continuing to remain unpredictable, disaster management authorities have urged residents and travelers to exercise caution. Continuous monitoring and preparedness measures are being maintained to respond swiftly to any further emergencies caused by snowfall or extreme cold.
